My wife and I have gotten so old we don't
buy green bananas anymore. A young man was scorning an old man, "Technologically, our generation is way ahead of yours. We've got television, computers, scanners, cell phones, microwave ovens, digital cameras." "Yes, I know," said the old man. "My generation invented them." It's curious that most old people treat their age as if they were guilty of something for having lived so long. "Whenever your friends begin to compliment you about looking young, you can be sure they think you're growing old." (Washington Irving) "Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born at the age of eighty and gradually approach eighteen." (Mark Twain) "From birth to age 18, a girl needs good parents, from 18 to 35 she needs good looks, from 35 to 55 she needs a good personality, and from 55 on she needs cash." (Sophie Tucker) There is an old Dutch saying: "Too soon old, too late smart." But the truth is that though we may be too soon old, it is never too late to be smart. At age 20 we worry about what others think of us. At age 40 we don't care what others think of us. At age 60 we discover they haven't been thinking of us at all. We fool ourselves. We pray for a long life, and fear old age. (From a Chinese Proverb) "We turn, not older with years, but newer every day." (Emily Dickerson) "I think that to have known one good, old manone man, who, through the chances and mischances of a long life, has carried his heart in his hand, like a palm-branch, waving all discords into peacehelps our faith in God, in ourselves, and in each other more than many sermons." (G. W. Curtis) "Quiet minds that rest in God cannot be perplexed or frightened, but go on in fortune or misfortune at their private pace, like a clock during a thunderstorm." (Robert Louis Stevenson) "The ten best years of a woman's life are between twenty-nine and thirty." (Peter Weiss) Looking back in our lives from the perspective of age, we find we don't remember days or months or years, we remember moments. "An archeologist is the best husband a woman can have; the older she gets, the more interested he is in her." (Agatha Christie) "If every day is an awakening, you will never grow old. You will just keep growing." (Gail Sheeby) "I am not young enough to know everything." (Oscar Wilde) "Perhaps one has to be very old before one learns to be amused rather than shocked." (Pearl S. Buck) Some people try to hide their old age as if they felt guilty about having lived so long. "Winter is on my head, but eternal spring is in my heart; I breathe at this hour the fragrance of the lilacs, the violets, and the roses, as at twenty years ago. The nearer I approach to the end, the plainer I hear around me the immortal symphonies of the worlds which invite me." (Victor Hugo) Old age is that time of life when every day you think you'll feel better tomorrow. "The great sin of maturity is losing one's zest for life." (Stanley Hall) It takes about ten years to get used to how old you are. "Forty is the old age of youth; fifty is the youth of old age." (Victor Hugo) The advantage age has over youth is that youth knows nothing about being old, whereas the old know all about being young. "A 20-year-old who isn't a liberal doesn't have a heart, and any 40-year-old who isn't a conservative doesn't have a brain." (Winston Churchill) "Middle age is when you're sitting at home on Saturday night and the telephone rings and you hope it isn't for you." (Ogden Nash) "As winter strips the leaves from around us, so that we may see the distant regions they formerly concealed, so old age takes away our enjoyments only to enlarge the prospect of the coming eternity." (John Paul Friedrich Richter) "As I grow older I pay less attention to what people say. I just watch what they do." (Andrew Carnegie) |
