On the page "God Is Eternal," we said there were two words that we could only truly apply to God: unique and eternal

Now we come to a third: infinite.

Infinite means limitless and measureless. Whatever God is, He is without limit, and whatever He is cannot be measured.

There is no point, edge, or line confining God, and no size or weight that can catalog Him. His being has neither a measurable beginning nor a measurable end. He fills eternity from everlasting to everlasting.

Beyond all that exists, and beyond beyond, there God is. Though we could stand on the highest point of God and look out over the farthest reaches of His vastness, we would find neither line nor horizon that marks the end of Him. God stretches from there to there; and beyond Him there, there is not.

Such a concept is beyond the comprehension of our finite minds. We are finite beings living in a limited world and surrounded by a measurable part of the universe. All that we know has size and weight. The distance from here to there, no matter where, is measurable. And even an atom can be weighed.

How far is up? How far is down? How large is that? We can apply none of these quantities to God. Start at any point in the being of God and move eternally in any constant direction and you would never come to a boundary encompassing Him—any more than you would ever stop moving since you move in eternity.

Scientists wonder increasingly if the universe is infinite. All that their newly developed satellites and powerful electronic telescopes show them is space beyond space and galaxies beyond galaxies. Is our universe infinite? Of course! For it is contained in God and God is infinite. "In Him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28).

Taken literally, this statement of Paul's can only mean that every created thing has its existence within God, and nothing exists outside Him. God creates out of the invisible fabric of His being (Hebrews 11:3), and He cannot take of Himself and thrust it out into nothingness and give it self-existence in a place that does not exist. For outside God there is nothing. And if there were something, God would be there for He is infinite, and that place would exist within God. In the essence of creation there is but One, and He is God, and all things that exist are but expressions of Him (Isaiah 6:3; Romans 1:19-20).

Because God's nature is infinite, it naturally follows that everything that flows out of God to His creation is infinite also. He is without limit, and so are all the facets of His nature. This being so, God never runs out of grace, love, mercy, patience, kindness, or any of the multitude of heavenly blessings that He has given us in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:3).

Being limited creatures we often drain ourselves of such things as love, understanding, mercy, patience. Because we do, we apply such limited qualities to God, both toward ourselves, and most especially toward others. We then presume to speak for God. "God has been patient as long as He can." "God's not going to put up with this much longer." "God's mercy only goes so far." "As bad as I've been, I don't see how God can love me anymore—or you either, as bad as you've been."

Those who say that God cannot love them because of what they have done—whether sinner or saint—put God into a humanized box of limited attributes. But God's love, like God Himself, is infinite and swallows up all the hates and hurts of this world, and still has room enough within itself for ten-million times ten-million other worlds, ad infinitum.

We say of ourselves about many things, "I've gone as far as I can go, I can't go any further," but we must never say that of God. The Apostle Paul wrote, "But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound" (Romans 5:20).

God's "much more" is an expression of His infinitude. No matter how much we draw upon the grace or love or mercy or help of God, there is always much more available to us. They never run out. They never end. Always we can go to God again for what we need, and always He is there waiting with an infinite abundance of supply. He calls us, He urges us, He implores us (Matthew 23:37), to receive from Him all that we need. His grace is as endless as He is, and He has already given us all spiritual blessings, infinite spiritual blessings, in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

As we go deeper into attempting to comprehend God's reasons for creation and His eternal purpose in Christ, we also need to apply the infinity of God to His righteous judgment. God will go the length of Himself to be righteous in every point of His judgment, no matter whom He is judging or what He is judging them for. This applies equally to humans and angels.

God's infinitude must not leave a shadow of turning in the certainty of the righteousness of His judgment of any of His creatures—both for that for which they will receive rewards, and for that for which they will be punished.
